Our Story
In 1993, Bernice W. Clay founded Living Advantage, Inc. to transform the lives of at-risk youth. With a background as a speech pathologist for the LA Unified School District, Bernice was passionate about helping children with special education needs, severe emotional challenges, and speech impediments. Her dream became a reality in 1996 when she opened the first six-bed group home for underserved youth. Though Bernice passed away just three years later, her legacy lives on through her daughter, Pamela R. Clay, who has continued to expand the organization’s mission.
Today, Living Advantage is a leader in supporting foster youth across Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Through innovative programs, we help children overcome systemic challenges like homelessness, unemployment, and incarceration. From conceptualizing the idea for eLockbox™—a digital storage solution for vital life documents—to introducing foster youth to STEAM education and career opportunities, we are bridging the gap between vulnerability and success.
Our mission has also evolved to meet youth where they are—literally and digitally. At our Los Angeles Youth Center (LAYC), we’ve created a safe, gaming-focused space where young people can build community, participate in esports tournaments, and access academic and career support. It’s more than a place to play; it’s a place to grow.

Our Leadership
With a background in real estate, Pamela R. Clay was inspired by the vision of her mother and founder Bernice W. Clay. Pamela R. Clay has led the organization as Executive Director, channeling her mother’s legacy into transformative programs and initiatives.
Our leadership is fueled by a shared belief in the potential of every child. From our Board of Directors to our dedicated staff and volunteers, we are united in our mission to provide foster youth with the dignity, opportunities, and resources they deserve. Through collaboration, innovation, and unwavering commitment, Living Advantage continues to shape a future where every child feels safe, supported, and capable of achieving their dreams.
