Hi my name is Kim Hayward and I am a product of the Foster Care System. I was placed in the system at age 11 when my mother passed away from a massive heart attack.  My father was in my life but, the loss of my mother sent him into a deep depression and he turned to alcohol.  This left me without both of my parents.  My great Aunt refused to have me adopted or placed with anyone other than herself so I fell into a program called Kinship, which is when a child in my situation gets placed with family members.  The next 7 years were very trying for me. I was mentally, emotionally and verbally abused by members of my own family. My father would show up for a month or two make promises and leave me again.  I was sheltered from common child hood experiences and missed out on so much all because my primary care taker never took the time to care.

I could have easily fallen into the negativity being thrown my way but I chose to do the opposite I chose to excel. In June of 2000 I graduated from Manual Arts Senior High School with honors.  I was honored with the Teauge Family Foundation Scholarship granted for four years to assist in my education where ever I decided to attend.  I was accepted into five Universities and I chose The Great California State University Dominguez Hills where I majored in Communications with a emphasize in Public Relations. I also gained a great deal of work experience. I served as the Vice President of Operations for over 13,000 students, Clubs & Organizations Commissioner for over 60 active clubs on campus and the Multicultural Representative for the Associated Students Inc. as well as Student Director of the Multicultural Center.  

I have been an active member of Living Advantage Inc for three years and I am so excited about all that we are doing here. Pamela R. Clay, the Executive Director and Eugenia Wilson, the Program Director has taught me so much about dedication and hard work and I am grateful for them both.  They have been working within the Foster Care System for 14+ years they have touched lives and turned bad situations into success stories. I only wish that I will be able to do the same….
